Resting Metabolic Rate(RMR) is the number of calories that your body burns while at rest. RMR is similar to Basal Metabolic Rate(BMR), but can include some low-effort tasks, such as going to the bathroom. RMR is measured after at least 15 minutes of rest with few other restrictions and does not need to be measured before getting out of bed. Once RMR is measured, the answer will give you the approximate number of calories your body burns daily while at rest.
After that number is determined, those calories burned during daily exercise and activities are added and a more accurate nutritional program can be determined.

For the test, clients wear a mask for a short period (around 15 minutes) while resting. The mask measures the exchange of gases to determine the calories you burn at rest. The test is often used in critically ill patients to determine their nutritional needs; non-medical settings (like gyms or clinics) may also offer it.

No single RMR value is appropriate for all adults. So, testing is necessary to get the best results for the individual. This combined with a personalized nutritional program creates successful results.
